August 2017

Congratulations and best wishes to Ray and Sandra Northcott who celebrated their Golden Wedding on 5th August 2017.  Ray, formerly of 35 Murray Place joined the Army in 1964 and after a full  service career including many overseas postings settled in Tewkesbury Gloucestershire with Sandra who is from Glenearn Terrace Perth.  They met as young teenagers when Ray was in the Black Watch cadets and Sandra was in the Girls Nautical Training Corps.

July 2017

Congratulations to Leigh Mitchell (formerly of King St) and Barry Grieve who were married at Oxnam Kirk Jedburgh on Saturday 22nd July 2017.  Reverend Marion Dodd officiated.  The reception was held at Runningburn Kelso.  We wish the newly married couple all the best for the future.

It’s 10 years today since 070707 and thought it was maybe time for a moment of reflection to remember the Stanley people who were on the list to attend the 070707 reunion and sadly are no longer with us today.    In no particular order:

Bob Scott the former Provost of Perth and Kinross who opened the event.  Peter Cameron Vice Chairman of the 070707 committee.  Peter was a former neighbour in Manse Cres and I knew him all of my life without one cross word.  On a personal note now my eldest sister Edna Gourlay (nee Donaldson) and nephew Denis Allan (Denis was on the list but work commitments prevented him attending). Bill Hancock who had travelled from Penang Malayasia to be there. Jim Whytock Snr and Jim Whytock Jnr former next door neighbours in Manse Cres for many years.  James Stewart.  Kate Gairns.  Beth Kennedy.  Mhairi Kay.  May Williamson (nee O’Brien).  Helen Smith (nee O’Brien). Rene Coghlan (nee O’Brien). Millie Stewart.  Abby Duff.  Jack & Isobel Ford.  Bob O’Brien.  Ron (Pike) Smith.

Hopefully this is the last message about the Guest Book.  We now have one on the website and although it is not exactly what I wanted it is about the only one available.  Please feel free to post your comments and you can access it by

Guest Book

The Guest Book has been offline since just before Christmas and I'll try to explain why without boring you to death. You are probably not aware but when you set up a website you have to pay an annual fee for a domain name ie Stanley Perthshire as well as renting webspace on the internet (similar to Council tax - the bigger house/space you need - the higher the fee).  To have a Guest Book on your site you also have to find another provider and in my case I paid a one off fee when the website was set up in 2005 to Guestbook which was run by Leslie Wright a singer/songwriter from Arkansas.  This was about the only Guest Book available that was ad free.  Just over a year ago Leslie who is now a web designer - check her website out at  sold the rights to Guest Book World for a four figure sum and the new owner decided to start charging an annual maintenance fee - probably to recoup their costs - which I rather grudgingly paid bearing in mind the original deal ie "one off fee".   This story is getting even more boring and I apologise for this but you need to know when the website is updated a copy needs to be saved on a memory stick/USB/flash drive/disc whatever you want to call it from the last backup and I do this without fail.  However, I cannot backup the Guest Book as it is a separate entity from the website.  Unfortunately last month when the Guest Book was being transferred or updated to another server by the new Guest Book owner this process failed.   When they tried to re-install it they found the backup disc was corrupted. Whilst it may be possible to recover the Guest Book I have been told it is unlikely that the historical entries made over the last 12 years will still exist which is really disappointing to put it mildly.  The current Guest Book owner is absolutely distraught about the situation too and has had someone working on it but it has been a while now so I doubt whether the outcome is going to be good.  We have also lost the tally of the number of visitors to the website which was just short of 100000.  I have been looking at new Guest Books or perhaps a forum instead but will wait a week or two before going ahead and making the change.  If you have any suggestions/ideas on the way forward then please let me know.

Sandie.

Nan Tait

Again many thanks to Nan Tait for her considerate donation of £25 towards my costs in leasing the Stanley website domain name from Nominet UK and the web space from 1 & 1 Internet Ltd.

Guest Book

Apologies that the Guest Book is temporarily offline.  I've contacted the people who I pay to maintain it and they hope to have it back up and running again in a few days.

October 2016

Happy Birthday to Kenny Gourlay, Gordon Howie, Lorna West, Nan Tait and Donella (Dawn Harbison) Firth who will all reach the age of 70 in October.  Gordon & Kenny on the 2nd, Lorna 20th, Nan 27th and Donella 28th.  Best wishes to you all.  Health and happiness always.

September 2016

Denis James Allan 19th September 1967 - 30th September 2016

Denis, eldest son of Les and Alma (nee Donaldson) of Russell Street Stanley died very suddenly and unexpectedly in his home in Aberdeen a few days after his 49th birthday.  Loving brother of David and Fiona, beloved partner of Yvonne and a devoted Dad of Haileigh.  Denis joined the Army in 1983 at the age of 16 and served in Germany, Northern Ireland, Falkland Islands and Cyprus  as well as other bases in the UK.   Funeral service at Perth Crematorium on Tuesday 18th October 2016 at 2pm to which all family and friends are respectfully invited. Black clothing optional.  R.I.P. Denis.

Stanley Post Office

For reasons I am not qualified to comment upon or offer an opinion the Post Office functions of Stanley Post Office has been transferred to the Spar shop further along Percy Street (formerly the old Co-op).   This is almost exactly opposite where the Post Office used to be situated up until the 1950's at 35 Percy Street now home to Lodge Stanley 1262.  George Cramb was the first Postmaster in the current or should I say ex Post Office.  Stanley Post Office is not closing and I understand it will now be a general store.  I have heard nothing but praise for the staff there and wish them all the best for the future.  Pictured below are the owners Stanley and Morag Middleton and their assistant Gillian Davie. (Thanks to Leslie Fraser who took the photo for the West Stormont Historical Society.)

Robert (Robbie) Buchan - 1947 - 1969

Commemorative Service Birkhill Cemetery Dundee 5th August 2016

Following previous items on the Notice Board I was privileged to attend this service for Robbie, a former classmate at Stanley School 1962-63.  Through Jimmy Donaldson I was approached by the Tay Valley Family History Society who had been asked to research Robbie's background on behalf of Colonel Fred Fairhead (pictured below), his Commanding Officer, who in writing his memoirs wanted information on Jock (Robbie) who had come from Scotland and had given his life on a tour of duty serving in Vietnam.  Talking to the Colonel at the ceremony it would appear that Robbie's actions that day probably saved the lives of 14 of his platoon comrades and the fact that he journeyed across to Scotland to organise the Service and pay his respects meant so much to him.

At the ceremony I met a lovely couple who had been good friends and farming neighbours of his Mum and Dad at Craigdallie near Inchture where the family finally settled in the Carse and also his first employer at the Dairy Farm near Errol whose family still have "The Horn" roadside eatery after he finished his studies at Lawers Agricultural College where he attended after leaving Stanley School.

Robbie was a cousin to Rena Lambert who now resides in Australia and I think his grandfather was Tam Davidson also from the village.  I was not aware of the Dundee connection until the articles appeared in the local press.  Those of you who knew Robbie will remember him as an outgoing and likeable guy who was good fun and loved his sport expecially cricket.

Ian Wells - 15th September 2016

August 2016

Helen Morrison Smith (nee O'Brien)

Helen died peacefully with her family at her side in Crieff Hospital on Friday 26th August 2016.  A much loved Mum of Heather and Steven and loving sister of Rene, Ed, Margaret and Dave.  Devoted Granny, Great Granny and Auntie.  The funeral service will be in Crieff Parish Church on Tuesday 6th September at 11am.  Interment thereafter at Caputh Cemetery.

July 2016

The late Robert Buchan

A wee update on the article posted in June 2014 regarding Robert Buchan who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969 aged 22.     Rena Lambert now resident in Australia and formerly of Athole Drive Stanley believes she is the only living relative of Robert (or Robbie as he was known).  Although there is no mention of Stanley in the newspaper article Robbie attended Stanley School and is in a 1962 school photo on the website.  Also for a short video of The Last Post Ceremony taken at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra commemorating the service of (55613) Private Robert Buchan 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Vietnam War.

Strictly speaking this photo has nothing to do with Stanley but Nan Tait who recently took it thought it would be of interest to the Stanley expats.  It shows the poppies "Weeping Window" at the Black Watch Castle and Museum to mark the centenary of the First World War.  The display is on until 25th September 2016 and she says it is well worth a visit.

June 2016

If you're feeling a bit fed up of  the European referendum or Euro 2016 here's a few topical cartoons by Raymond Sime to cheer you up.

May 2016

Alexander (Big Eck) O'Brien

Eck O'Brien quietly passed away with his beloved daughter by his side on Monday 23rd May 2016 at Perth Royal Infirmary (PRI) aged 75 years.  The funeral will be held on Wednesday 1st June at Perth Crematorium at 2pm and if desired, there will be a retiring collection taken for Dementia UK and the Stroke Unit at PRI.

Congratulations to Craig Mitchell and Gillian Stevenson who were married at Dunkeld House Hilton on Sunday 1st May 2016.  Reverend David Barrie, Pastor of Pitlochry Baptist Church and Saint Johnstone FC officiated.  We wish the newly married couple all the best for the future.

April 2016

Stanley Parish Church

Local people will have read in the press the bad news about Stanley Parish Church which was severely damaged during Storm Frank but I am including this note for the benefit of those who do not live locally.  Officials at the Church of Scotland say that £1.5 million would be needed to safeguard the building for the next 20 years.  Simply to make the church safe for temporary use would require more than half a million pounds.  Because of the huge costs it is unlikely the church will ever re-open.

January 2016

Thanks to Ivan Haggart for his very generous donation of £500.00 towards my costs in leasing the Stanley website domain name and webspace from 1 & 1 Internet Ltd and the new Guest Book fees.  This magnificient contribution should cover the above costs until 2020.  Thanks again Ivan - your generosity is much appreciated.

Stanley Parish Church

Stanley people everywhere will be disappointed to learn that our church is closed due to structural damage and will shortly be cordoned off owing to its unsafe condition. In 1828 the Proprietors of the Mill petitioned for a Church built for more than £3000. Formerly called the Tower Church it was raised to quoad sacra status in 1877. Further information will be given when it is available but in the meantime normal  Sunday Services are being held in the Village Hall which co-incidentally used to be St James' Church.

Guest Book

Apologies that the Guest Book was temporarily unavailable for a few days earlier this month.  The Company  I purchased the Guest Book from 10 years ago (Leslie Wright of - Leslie is an American singer/songwriter) charged a one off setting up fee.  The Company has recently changed hands and the new owners who are UK based are now demanding an annual rental fee.  Now that I'm aware of this the fee has been paid for 2016 so hopefully it won't go offline again this year.  There are numerous free Guest Books available but they are littered with pop up ads and I wanted to avoid this on the Stanley website.  This is the reason I chose Guest Book World in 2005.
